AUSTRALIAN WOMEN IN WINE AWARDS
2015 was the inaugural year of the Australian Women in Wine Awards. On Friday 16 November 2018, the fourth Australian Women in Wine Awards symposium and award day will be held in Sydney at Quay restaurant. This is event is organised by the Fabulous Ladies’ Wine Society and celebrates women working in the wine industry.
As a founding member of the Yarra Valley Women of Wine, I have spent many hours with my colleagues discussing gender-specific events. It is quite shocking to note that 50% of graduates in winemaking and viticulture are women but we only make up 10% of working winemakers and viticulturists. How does that happen? For me the key factor about women focussed events is about retention – trying to retain the talent that starts in the wine industry but then disappears. We need to show young women that a long career in the wine industry is possible and this can only be done by showing our faces and putting our hands up to say we are here.
Helen and Joey Estate is, I suspect, one of the few wine businesses with a 50:50 male to female split in our staff. We have amazing wine chicks working for us on our marketing & communications, logistics, financials, winemaking and our CEO and owner, Helen, is our leading force. In 2018 we will be attending the Australian Women in Wine Awards and the daughters of winearchy public tasting the following day. We will be there this year to join in the symposium and networking and, of course, the amazing lunch. The Yarra Valley Women of Wine have offered a selection of our Yarra Valley Chardonnays for the lunch.
The public tasting daughters of winearchy, showcasing wines from female winemakers, will be an opportunity for further networking and the opportunity to taste some great wines. If you are in Sydney on Saturday 17 November come down to Marrickville Town Hall to taste, chat with the winemakers and find out what is new on the winescape.
