Experience that spans more than twenty years and three continents is rare, particularly for a young winery. At Helen & Joey Estate, that experience is led by our Senior Winemaker, Meg Brodtmann.

Meg began her winemaking career in Australia before building an international reputation across Europe and South America. As a consultant for Cellarworld International in the UK, she worked closely with producers to define wine styles for the evolving UK market. At the same time, she contributed as a judge for the International Wine Challenge and wrote for publications including Decanter, La Cav and Wine State.

In 2001, Meg moved to Chile. Over the next seven years, she worked as a senior winemaker, broker and consultant. This included time at Viña Morandé in the Cachapoal Valley, an 11 million litre winery. During this period, she also established Southern Cross Wines. Through this business, she developed and delivered wine education programmes across Latin America, including Chile and Brazil. In addition, she created some of the first approved programmes for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.

Meg’s dedication to wine education and research led to her receiving the Deinhard Award for Best Dissertation from the Institute of Masters of Wine. She later became Australia’s first female Master of Wine.

After returning to Australia in 2008, Meg re-established Southern Cross Wines locally. Since then, she has worked with Cellarmaster Wines as their Victorian Brand Champion and has taught WSET Levels 2 to 4 in Melbourne. She has also trained future WSET educators and contributed to the Master of Wine programme as Chief Examiner for Paper 2.

Throughout her career, Meg has remained actively involved in the wine industry. She judges at regional and international wine shows and contributes to education and industry development through various committees and events.

Beyond her achievements, Meg brings energy and clarity to everything she does. Her passion for wine is evident and has a strong influence on both our wines and our team.
