2019 Wayward Child Ilion

$40.00

If the palate was a moment in time, imagine wearing a fresh linen suit in the sunshine grazing on a platter of juicy tropical fruit.

Helen and Joey Estate contains just a couple of rows of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, two blending varieties that have form in Bordeaux Fr. and Margaret River WA. What is lesser known is that the varieties also have form in the Yarra Valley for the production of long aging ultra-premium white wines, far removed from the Classic Dry White / SSB commercial styles of the west.

Wayward Child Ilion is our attempt at producing one of the best of these Yarra Valley wine blends. Unlike the red blend (Serendip), the white blend sees the varieties kept separately through fermentation and maturation. Ferments are wild; the Semillon component, citrus, lean and clean; the Sauvignon funky and nectar ripe. The wine was bottled without filtration of any adjustments.

Wayward Child ~ Spirit of adventure & the journey of discovery.

Throughout our vineyard we have scattered patches of Semillon, interplanted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. In earlier years, we have used the Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc to make a Late Harvest wine but in 2018 decided to try our hand at a dry table wine.

The Semillon and Sauvignon blanc were hand harvested on the same day and the grapes processed together. A small portion of Semillon was processed separately to achieve a pristine Semillon. The Semillon juice was settled prior to cool fermentation in stainless steel and then aged in old oak. The Sauvignon/Semillon blended portion was used to produce more funky style. The Sauvignon & Semillon grapes were crushed and given 4 hours of skin contact prior to pressing. This juice was fermented wild with full solids in 5-year old oak barriques. Pressings were fermented wild in old oak.

After maturation in the old oak, the wines were blended to produce our first ever Wayward Child Ilion and we can’t be more delighted with the results. The Semillon expresses itself with lemon pith and white flower while the Sauvignon is more brash with tropical fruits and an earthy aroma. The acid is not for the faint hearted – this wine is the epitomy of dry.

We expect the 2019 Wayward Child Ilion to evolve over a 5-10 year period. What that evolution will bring is anyone’s guess but please join us on our journey of discovery.
