The 2015 Alena Chardonnay was hand harvested on 20 and 21 February. The grapes were whole bunch pressed and the free run and pressings separated until final blending. After chilling, 100% of the unsettled juice was placed in 500 litre puncheons and 228 litre barriques for fermentation by wild yeast. The fermentation was long and slow, taking almost 2 ½ weeks to complete. At the end of fermentation, the wine was left on yeast lees for 9 months with weekly stirring to develop a creamy, texture palate. The wine was blended and bottled in February 2016.
The 2015 Alena Chardonnay abides by our driving force of power, strength and elegance. The oak is initially evident on the nose with aromas of vanilla and clove. The wine has a distinct minerality on both the nose and the palate which is supported by the lemon pith, nectarine and just ripe pear flavours. The wine is elegant and fine with a long, mouth watering finish.
The restraint on this wine suggests it will continue to age and improve in bottle. Our Alena wines are designed to be drunk with some age on them but if you can’t wait, enjoy the 2015 Alena Chardonnay with a tapas of prawns and chorizo.
