The Alena Cabernet Merlot for this blend was picked from the top of our west-facing 12-acre Cabernet block. The Merlot for this wine was taken from our most elevated Merlot block, just above the Cabernet. Merlot has a tendency to prefer well-drained soils, which our top block allows. This Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot blend was a barrel selection of our best parcels of Cabernet and Merlot off our estate vineyard. The wine is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Merlot, with 30% new oak in the blend. Appearance is a deep with ruby hue. The wine shows dark choc-mint, Christmas pudding and some mint leaf notes. The palate is long and firm with silky smooth tannin. The palate is well structured showing dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, forest berries and four spice. The finish is persistent with layered fruit and spice notes. Great wines can be drunk with any food, but to match this youthful wine perfectly we recommend Portuguese-style lamb espetadas. A full-bodied wine, which will reward patience of up to 15 years cellaring. Decanting is recommended.
