WINNER OF THE 2024 ROYAL MELBOURNE WINE AWARDS, BEST PINOT GRIS
Hand harvested Pinot Gris, chilled, whole bunch pressed and fermented ‘wild’. This is the first of the Wayward Child versions of Pinot Gris that is made from pressed juice, all others having been full-on versions of the ‘orange’ or ‘skinsy white’ phenom. The wine was held in tank on yeast and other fine solids until bottling in late July 2024.
Tasting Note
Appearance is very bright, light straw yellow. So very bright!!
Aromas of lemons as juice and as curd. Toasted grain iterates as lemon barley water and there is flinty mineral and a hint of gun smoke. Very refined, elegant and composed.
To taste, this is a very fresh and linear version of Pinot Gris. Wayward Child versions of what we do is about region and vineyard above an idea of grape variety expression and that is what we have in in spades with this wine. Yarra Valley is all about elegance and restraint and this, unusually for most Pinot Gris, is a very elegant and restrained white wine.
Flavours are a tight band of lemon, bouquet garni soft herbs, with tarragon and marjoram most evident, whet stone mineral character and a moment of smokiness. Very long and harmonious from start to finish and crying out to matched with the finest of seafood or lemon scented vegetable dishes.
