Pairing Wine with Chinese and Asian Cuisine

Pairing Wine with Chinese and Asian Cuisine

Pairing wine with South-East-Asian cuisine, especially popular Chinese dishes, can be tricky if you approach it with a purely Western food and wine mindset. Classic pairing rules often focus on things like cream, butter, roasted meats and simple savoury sauces, but many Eastern dishes work across a much wider flavour spectrum. Sweet, sour, salty, spicy, umami, fermented and aromatic elements can all appear on the same plate. Think Sichuan pepper, chilli oil, soy, black vinegar, ginger, garlic, sesame, hoisin, five spice or gochujang. These ingredients do not always ask for the biggest or boldest wine. More often, they reward freshness, texture, perfume and balance.

Once you open your mind to those flavours, the pairing possibilities become incredibly exciting. A bright, textural white like our Unicorn Pinot Gris can be fantastic with dumplings, seafood, lighter noodle dishes or white cut chicken, where its pear and lychee notes sit beautifully against ginger, soy and delicate spice. For richer dishes with chilli, fermented bean paste or gochujang, a wine with fruit, softness and freshness can work better than a heavily oaked red. Our Wayward Child Pinot Noir or Unicorn Pinot Noir are great examples, offering red fruit, gentle savoury notes and enough lift to handle spice without overwhelming the dish.

For deeper Chinese flavours like braised pork belly, Peking duck, cumin lamb, char siu or mushroom-heavy dishes, you can move into more structured reds, but balance still matters. Our Re’em Syrah brings dark fruit, spice and savoury texture that can echo pepper, five spice and slow-cooked meats, while our Re’em Cabernets offer polished tannin and depth for richer dishes. Sweeter and spicier plates can also be surprisingly good with our Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc or Merlot, where natural sweetness helps soften heat and bring out the aromatics in dishes with chilli, Sichuan pepper or sticky glazed sauces.

This is something we have taken great care with at Helen & Joey Estate. Our wines are made from our single estate vineyard and crafted on site, but they are also shaped with both Eastern and Western palates in mind. Nothing has sharpened that focus more than the whole team working together, from Helen and Joey to our winemaker and kitchen team, tasting, testing and refining how our wines sit beside different cuisines. So next time you are heading to a BYO Chinese or Asian restaurant, skip the usual safe bottle and bring something with brightness, texture and character. A well-chosen Yarra Valley Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Syrah or late harvest wine can turn dinner into something genuinely memorable.
