Blessed are the Cheesemakers
For the last few months at Helen & Joey Estate we have been offering food. I am particularly happy to be serving up a selection of cheese from Stone & Crow.
The Yarra Valley boasts some great food producers. Stone & Crow stands tall in this pack and is the private label of ace Yarra based Cheese Maker, Jack Holman. As well as having worked with a number of products he has made for another leading local producer over lots of years, my son’s former teacher is Jack’s wife. Yes, we can be a little bit small and local in the Yarra Valley.
Now there is a thing about aspiring to make the finest possible of craft cheeses in Australia. It’s bloody hard. I remember with great sadness the passing of Ironstone cheese from Gippsland in 2009. To that date, easily one of the most excellent hard cheeses made in Victoria. That is why cheese makers are blessed.
The arrival of Stone and Crow over the last few years has added more substance to the great cheese offerings from anywhere in this country. Jack is making six different cheeses. Tasting notes follow with a suggestion of which of our wines match best.
Amiel: An ashed goats’ milk cheese that is super light and mousse-like in texture that develops into a slightly sharper and mildly chalky cheese. Enjoy with Layla Pinot Noir
Galactic Disk: Yeast surface ripened buttery and rich soft cows’ milk cheese. Enjoy with Alena Chardonnay.
Night Walker: Soft elegant washed rind that turns all funky and strong. Delicious with Inara Shiraz.
Annie Baxter: A hard buffalo’s milk cheese, made in Western Victoria but matured by Jack locally. The cheese I’ve been waiting for since the demise of ironstone. Texture heaven with Alena Cabernet Sauvignon.
Moonshine: Semi hard cows’ milk cheese that is elegant and really got for melting. We wash the skin with Layla chardonnay but serve it with Wayward Child skins Pinot Gris.
Venus Blue: as far as I’m concerned, the world’s best blues are not too overt. Here is an elegant and florally perfumed example that is absolutely perfect with our Late Harvest Sauvignon Semillon.
And so we add another string to our bow… great views, great wines, great peeps, plus great cheese… and of course, great Unicorns.
